bureau à cylindre




A highly unusual bureau à cylindre veneered with Japanese namban lacquer of the Momoyama period (1568-1603). Of Japanese Namban lacquer inset with mother of pearl, the legs, back and interior drawers of black, gold and red European lacquer. The whole surmounted by a pierced three-quarter bronze gallery, the cylinder roll-top decorated with three panels of Japanese Namban lacquer, each decorated with a floral pattern with mother of pearl insets, the panels set within shaped borders decorated with mother of pearl against a gilt decorated ground, the three sections interspaced with bands of geometric decoration inlaid with mother of pearl, the cylinder roll-top edged with a band of lozenge decoration and opening to reveal a fitted interior with lacquer decoration to the restored drawers, the roll-top above three short drawers, the drawer fronts comprising conforming panels of Namban lacquer, each side similarly decorated with four panels of Namban lacquer, the lower panels decorated with oriental scenes, the whole raised on four square tapering legs of black lacquer with gilt decoration, each leg terminating in a square sabot foot raised on castors.
